A Change in Perspective

While waiting for feedback on my new ms (YA apocalyptic) from my awesome critique partners, I pulled up my first ms (YA urban fantasy) that I wrote last year. I hadn't touched it in months, and honestly wasn't sure whether to junk it entirely or see if I could fix it. I had a sudden urge to re-write the entire thing in 1st person POV (it was in 3rd), and doing that one thing caused a huge shift in my manuscript.

I felt less distance from the MC, which in turn, changed events (including the climax) and even characters throughout the story. I've loved reading books written in both 1st and 3rd POV, but 1st person worked much better for mine. Has anyone else changed the POV of their story from 3rd to 1st, or vice versa? Did you notice a difference?

Also, there was ANOTHER amazing live event from WRITE ON CON yesterday featuring fabulous literary agent Roseanne Wells from the Marianne Strong Literary Agency. Roseanne gave her thoughts on real query letters posted in the forum and her responses were super informative. Click here to replay it.

  1. I even posted a reminder about the chat in my Monday post, and I still forgot. Ugh.

Kristi, I can't wait to see the changes! I personally prefer first person, although I have read some amazing books in 3rd. I attempted once to try my first ms in 3rd (from 1st) but I didn't get very far with it. I'm not convinced it would work better for me this time.

  2. Lacey--I liked yours in 1st too. I think I prefer first overall, but have recently read several in 3rd that I really liked (e.g. The Giver).

  3. I'm about half way done changing my WIP from 3rd to 1st, right now. It's hard work, but well worth it if the story calls for it.

  4. Ooh, I'm excited to see the changes Kristi! I also prefer reading 1st (Harry Potter being one major exception) and I have a really hard time writing in 3rd. Distance is always an issue for me in 3rd, which is why I think I don't care for it as much. That must've been hard work making the change!

  5. Matthew--good luck!

Valerie--I can't wait for you guys to see it. It wasn't hard so much as tedious. I had to use the find function to catch some 'hers' and 'she's' that I missed. :)

  6. I got three pages or so into my first manuscript and went back and switched from third person to first. Ever since I've written everything but one short story in first person. I prefer reading first person (thought I love a lot of books that are in third) so I think first comes more naturally to me than third.

  7. Nicole--yeah, I wished I had realized it on page 3 instead of after I wrote the whole book-lol!

  8. For one of my first YA manuscripts, I made the change from 3rd person POV to 1st person--and it made a world of a difference. My manuscript is much stronger because of that change. :)
